The effects of canavanine, arginine, and related compounds on the growth of bacteria.

چکیده
The physiological properties of canavanine, a naturally occurring, structural analogue of arginine, have not been extensively investigated. Recently, Horowitz and Srb (1) found that canavanine inhibited growth of wild type Neurospora, and that the inhibition was competitively alleviated by arginine. Lysine and methionine were also effective in alleviating canavanine inhibition for certain strains of Neurospora, though not so effective as arginine. The sensitivity of various Neurospora types to inhibition by canavanine varied considerably, and appeared to be genetically determined. These authors review the limited previous work dealing with the physiological response of various organisms to canavanine. As an extension of this work, the present article describes the effects of canavanine on growth of several lactic acid bacteria. In contrast to wild type Neurospora, most of these organisms require arginine for growth. For comparative purposes, two strains of Escherichia coli have been used, a parent strain which grows without added arginine, and an arginine-requiring mutant derived from the parent strain by treatment with mustard gas.l

Effect of canavanine on mutants of Neurospora and Bacillus subtilis.
The inhibition of microorganisms by canavanine, an amino acid whi -1 occurs in the jack and horse beans (1, 2), has recently been the subject of several investigations. Horowitz and Srb (3) studied the effect of canavanine on three wild type strains of Neurospora, one sensitive, one of intermediate sensitivity, and one resistant to canavanine inhibition. They found that arginine and, to a lesse...
متن کاملThe competitive effect of canavanine on utilization of arginine in growth of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 cells in vitro.
Accordingly, it was of interest to study argininecanavanine relationships in actively multiplying tumor cells. Arginine has been shown to be essen tial for the growth of the Walker carcinosarcoma 256 in vitro (8) ; and, with the recent developments in tissue culture (9, 11) in this laboratory, it was possible to study the effects of canavanine on argi nine metabolism during tumor cell growth. T...

Marine algae are shown to contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, which have commercial application in pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, food and agricultural industries. The biological activity of the natural bio-active compounds in algae has wide effects on bacteria, tumors and antioxidant activities. The purpose of this study was to determine antibacterial activity of th...
متن کاملA Review on the Effect of Arginine on Growth Performance, Meat Quality, Intestine Morphology, and Immune System of Broiler Chickens
For chickens, arginine considered an essential amino acid due to the lack of urea cycle in birds. Arginine deficiency causes growth retardation, higher prevalence of disease due to the malfunction of immune system, and lower gastrointestinal capacity. However, higher levels of arginine in the diet improved growth performance, muscle hypertrophy, and meat quality. Arginine reduces carcass fat ac...
متن کاملEffect of Exogenous Application of L-arginine and Sodium Nitroprusside on Fruit Abscission and Physiological Disorders of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L.) Scions
Pistachio yield are often negatively affected by some physiological problems such as abscission of inflorescence buds and fruits, deformed or blank nuts, and non-split shells. In the present study the effect of exogenous application of arginine (Arg) (a substrate for nitric oxide (NO) synthase) and sodium nitroproside (SNP), as a NO-donor was investigated on yield production, fruit and inflores...
